Francis Edgar Stanley [Parents] was born on 1 Jun 1849 in Kingfield, ME. He died on 31 Jul 1918 in Newburyport Turnpike, Wenham, MA. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Kingfield, ME. He married Augusta May Walker on 1 Jan 1870.
Invented the Stanley Steamer along with his twin brother, Freelan Oscar Stanley. See notes on Freelan Oscar for information on the Stanley Steamer.
An award-winning protrait artist, he patented the airbrush in 1876. He and his brother Freelan Oscar became partners in the Stanley Dry Plate Co. in 1884 and patented a dryplate coating machine that revolutionized the process. Eastman Kodak bought Stanleys' dry plate company in 1904 long after F.E. had begun tinkering with motorized carriages, using steam as the energy source. His machine was demkonstrated in 1898 at Charles River Park Velodrome in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where it set a world record of 27 mph. The brothers worked in a converted bicycle shop in Watertown, Massachusetts, filling 100 orders in 1898-99 before selling out to a magazine publisher who rechristened the early Stanley Steamers as the Locomobile. Later they got back into the business.
F.E. was killed in 1918 when he crashed a Steamer near Topsfield, Massachusetts and it is said that this lead to the demise of the company some 6 years later. F.O then turned to a violin making business. Both brothers made violins as a hobby, all their lives.
Augusta May Walker was born on 20 Aug 1848. She died on 11 Jul 1927. She married Francis Edgar Stanley on 1 Jan 1870.
