Dixfield, Sept. 15— Following a short illness, Joseph Polk Ed¬munds, oldest man in the town of Dixfield died Sunday night. Mr. Edmunds was born Dec, 1, 1844, the son of Eli and Harriett Stockbridge Edmunds. At an early age he entered the blacksmith trade with his father and continued as the village blacksmith for more than 50 years. Mr. Edmunds was fond of outdoor sports especially fishing, hunting, and baseball. He was a lover of fine horses.
He has been honored three times for long service and only recently he was presented a Masonic em¬blem for 50 years of continuous member-ship. In 1930 he was awarded the Post gold headed cane for being the oldest man in town. Pie was interested in. everything pertaining to the civic life. He was tax collector for more than a quar¬ter of a century.
Mr. Edmunds took an active part in the erection of the church chapel and a memorial tablet to the first pastor, Rev. Edward V. Wheeler, He lived for 55 years in the house on Main street to which he took his bride, Miss Emma Brown,
He is survived by a sister, Mrs, Lucy Edmunds Brown, a daughter, Miss Ina Elteen Edmunds, and a son-in-law, Charles H. Rowe, the husband of the late Edna Edmunds Rowe.
The funeral service of Joseph P. Edmunds, whose death occurred Sunday the 13th, was held at the Edmunds home Wednesday after¬noon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Thomas B. Hatt of Hampden a former pastor of the Dixfield Congregational church officiated, assisted by Rev, Clifford V, Cross the present pastor of the church. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends, and a profusion of flowers. A Ma¬sonic service was held at the grave by members of King Hiram lodge F. & A. M. of which Mr. Edmunds had been a member for 59 years. The bearers were C. H. Rowe, Viv¬ian Horne, Walter Reynolds, and Wade Trask. The interment in family lot at Greenwood cemetery.
