It was the custom to name children after famous people. Elbridge Gerry (1744-1814) was fifth vice president, under James Monroe, 1813 until his death in 1814. His political career began in 1772 when he became a member of the Mass. General Court. He joined Samuel Adams in opposition to the British. He was a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1787 he represented Mass. at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. He was a member of the US House of Representatives from 1789 to 1793. In 1810 Gerry was elected governor of Mass. as a Democratic-Republican. The term "gerrymander" originated in 1812 when Gov. Gerry signed a bill redistricting Mass in such a way as to ensure his own party continued control. One district was compared in shape to a salamander, which then led to Gerrymander.
